A Legacy That Began Three Generations Ago

The Kasliwal family's journey in helping people hear and communicate began long before cochlear implantation became a reality in Rajasthan.

It began with Dr. K.C. Kasliwal, who worked closely with patients with hearing and communication difficulties, and Mrs. Ratna Prabha Kasliwal, one of the early speech therapists in Rajasthan. Her work with children with hearing and speech difficulties established an important understanding that would continue through the generations: helping a child hear is only the beginning; helping that child learn to listen, communicate and speak is equally important.

That commitment to hearing and communication became the foundation for the next generation.

The Vision of Dr. Neeraj Kasliwal

For Dr. Neeraj Kasliwal, the decision to pursue cochlear implantation was driven by a desire to help children who were deaf and had limited access to spoken communication.

At a time when cochlear implantation was still a relatively new and evolving field, bringing this technology to Rajasthan required much more than surgical expertise.

Dr. Neeraj Kasliwal travelled extensively to develop his knowledge and experience, receiving training and exposure at centres across the world, including in Australia, Germany and Poland.

His vision was to establish a comprehensive cochlear implant programme in Jaipur—one that brought together surgery, audiology, technology and rehabilitation.

The Beginning — 2007

In 2007, the Kasliwal Cochlear Implant Programme began its journey in Jaipur.

The early years were challenging.

Three major obstacles stood in the way.

Awareness

Cochlear implantation was still unfamiliar to many families. Parents often did not know that children with severe or profound hearing loss could potentially benefit from an implant.

Creating awareness and helping families understand the possibilities of cochlear implantation became an important part of the programme.

Cost

The financial cost of cochlear implantation was another significant challenge.

The implant itself was only one part of the overall expense. Surgery, audiological programming and long-term rehabilitation all formed part of the journey.

For many families, affordability could determine whether implantation was possible.

Rehabilitation

Perhaps the most important lesson of the early years was that cochlear implantation does not end with surgery.

The implant provides access to sound, but the brain has to learn to interpret those sounds.

Children need structured auditory and speech-language rehabilitation. Parents and families need to participate actively in the process. Progress can take time, and every child's journey is different.

This understanding became central to the team's approach.

The First Activation

Among the most memorable moments in the programme's early journey was the first successful activation.

The patient's response was remarkably positive.

For the team and the family, seeing the patient respond to sound after the implant was a deeply emotional and encouraging moment.

It reinforced the belief that cochlear implantation could offer something that conventional approaches could not always provide for appropriately selected patients with profound hearing loss.

But it also marked the beginning of another journey—the journey of learning to listen.

Building a Team Around the Patient

Over time, the cochlear implant programme evolved into a multidisciplinary service.

The surgical team today comprises Dr. Neeraj Kasliwal and Dr. Ashwath Kasliwal.

The programme works closely with the Asha Kiran speech and language habilitation Centre, particularly for auditory-verbal therapy and rehabilitation.

This collaboration reflects a fundamental principle of the programme:

The success of a cochlear implant depends not only on the surgery, but on everything that follows it.

Assessment, surgery, device programming, auditory training, speech and language development, family participation and long-term follow-up all play important roles.

Growing With Technology

The evolution of cochlear implant technology has been remarkable. Over the years, the Kasliwal team has worked with all three major cochlear implant manufacturers:

• Cochlear
• MED-EL
• Advanced Bionics

The programme has also embraced newer generations of technology, including a recent Cochlear Nucleus Nexa System is marketed as the world’s first and only smart cochlear implant system. 

This experience across different implant platforms has allowed the team to witness the remarkable progress made in implant technology, sound processing and device design.

The programme has also performed multiple bilateral cochlear implantations, providing appropriately selected patients with access to hearing through both ears.

For Dr. Neeraj Kasliwal, the continuing advancement of cochlear implant technology remains a source of great optimism. Having witnessed the transformation in patients' lives over many years, he continues to hold a strong belief in the potential of newer technology to further improve outcomes.

The Patients Who Made the Journey Meaningful

The true measure of a cochlear implant programme cannot be found only in the number of surgeries performed, it is found in what patients go on to achieve.

Over the years, our programme has witnessed remarkable transformations.

Our patients have gone on to become international-level painter, doctors, engineers etc.

These achievements are deeply meaningful to the team because they demonstrate that a child's journey does not have to be defined by hearing loss.

With appropriate intervention, rehabilitation, family support and educational opportunities, children can go on to pursue their dreams and contribute meaningfully to society.

The Next Generation — Dr. Ashwath Kasliwal

The journey entered a new chapter when Dr. Ashwath Kasliwal began becoming actively involved in the cochlear implant programme approximately five years ago.

Working alongside his father has allowed the family's commitment to hearing care to continue into another generation.

Dr. Ashwath has witnessed the remarkable evolution of cochlear implantation while learning from his father's experience and contributing to the programme's continuing development.

Together, Dr. Neeraj Kasliwal and Dr. Ashwath Kasliwal have continued to perform cochlear implant surgery, including multiple bilateral implantations.

The programme has also continued to extend implantation to increasingly young children, with the youngest patient being implanted recently.

More Than an Operation

A cochlear implant is a remarkable piece of technology.

But technology alone does not create transformation.

Behind every successful cochlear implant is a child or adult, a family, a surgical team, audiologists, therapists and years of rehabilitation and support.

The goal is not simply to place an implant. The goal is to help a patient:

Looking Back — and Looking Ahead

The cochlear implant journey of the Kasliwal family is a story that spans three generations.

It began with Dr. K.C. Kasliwal and Mrs. Ratna Prabha Kasliwal, continued with the vision of Dr. Neeraj Kasliwal, and is now being carried forward by Dr. Ashwath Kasliwal and the multidisciplinary team.

From the challenges of creating awareness, making treatment accessible and establishing rehabilitation services, to the extraordinary advances in cochlear implant technology today, the field has changed dramatically. But the fundamental purpose has remained the same.

To give people with profound hearing loss an opportunity to experience sound and to help them make the most of that opportunity.

The journey that began in Jaipur in 2007 continues to evolve—with newer technology, bilateral implantation, earlier intervention and an ever-deeper understanding of auditory rehabilitation.

And while the technology will continue to change, the reason behind the work will remain constant:

Every patient deserves the opportunity to hear.
Every child deserves the opportunity to communicate.
And every family deserves hope.

From silence to sound.
